Building A Furniture Store, Brick By Brick

by sam on September 3, 2011

Brick Furniture has become Canada’s largest volume furniture retailer since it first began in 1969. Thinking about the retail giant’s lowly inception, hardly any individuals would have expected the company’s present-day degree of achievement. For one thing, the first store wasn’t even named Brick Furniture, and the proprietor was very unwilling to even become involved in the retail furniture market. Notwithstanding the label changes and changes of intentions, or maybe thanks to them, this business has evolved from a declining family business to a retail giant with more than 200 retail sites in Canada.

When Herb Comrie died in 1969, he handed on his family-owned furniture store to his 19 year old son, Bill. Bill Comrie was not interested in running a furniture store, and at first attempted to sell the shop. Even though he failed to manage to sell the company, he finally managed to bring in two additional partners who agreed to assume half of the business if he would consent to stay on and mange it. The enterprise was re-christened Bill Comrie’s Alberta Factory sales, and Bill began to get creative.

According to legend, Bill initiated the original midnight madness sale and then cleared out $144,000 worth of product in a few hours, which was a little more than Herb Comrie sold off throughout the prior year. Comrie then attempted to expand, although his partners did not , so following a buyout and a restart, Bill Comrie’s Furniture Warehouse launched in Edmonton in 1971. Comrie then began one more marketing innovation in the early 70s by being the spokesman in his own advertisements as an alternative to hiring models or actors. It seems that people took him up on his unique invitations, which explains why sales expanded steadily during the 70s.

In 1975, Bill relocated his Furniture Warehouse into a spacious brick warehouse on the north edge of Edmonton and rebranded it The Brick Warehouse, but later on, The Brick. During the early 80s Comrie and his team were opening new stores in Calgary and Ft.  McMurray, as well as other major Canadian cities.

Thanks to a mix of imaginative marketing and an aggressive motivation, Bookshelf Furniture outlets have kept growing consistently, adding a concept store, a distribution center and several Brick SuperStores. This voracious young organization furthermore acquired the United Furniture Warehouse stores in Canada and rapidly relabeled them as Boyles Furniture stores. Brick additionally has a lately re-designed website which enables customers access to above 6,000 products.
